Many years ago, I began the task of carving paths in the natural habitat that had become my backyard. With an eye to keep as many trees and plants as possible, I designed a series of curving walkways that meandered through the trees, bushes, and plants.
When I learned that Raspberry was ill, I knew he would have a spot in the backyard. He loved being outside. He did not run free, but was taken on many walks along the paths. Little did I know that when I cleared the paths, I would be clearing a path for him. |

Raspberry resides under the olive fringe tree. For a while, a few cement pavers, a ceramic cat I painted, and a bouquet of flowers marked his place. |
Over the years, wind chimes, statutes, plaques, and other pieces were added. |
A few years ago, brick stepping stones were added. |
Even with numerous coats of varnish, the weather had taken its toll on the ceramic cat statue. |
Last July, for Raspberry’s fifth year in kitty heaven, I decided to paint the statue to look like him. I removed the remaining pieces of varnish, primed the statue, and painted it, following a photograph of him sitting in almost the same position. |
